Welcome to Therapeutic Communities Talk

Therapeutic Community is a participatory, group-based approach to mental illness and drug addiction. It has a long-standing tradition, which dates back to the 1950s for the UK and the 1960s for the USA.

Although a significant body of research evidence has developed on the TC approach over the years, almost nothing is known about the role of talk in the therapeutic process. This website provides a growing and periodically updated body of evidence on how TC professionals and clients talk to each other, and on the function of communication in bringing about behavioural and emotional change.

The research approach behind the evidence reported here is conversation analysis.

Please use the menu to explore different communication tasks and skills involved in the TC approach.
