Knowledge display: a strategy for soliciting clients to share

A knowledge display is a communication practice that Therapeutic Community staff use to encourage their clients to share their experiences. They use it when clients show reluctance or inability to talk about themselves. In these circumstances, staff members can use a knowledge display to communicate that they already know something about the clients’ experiences and circumstances. In this way, they lay out a direction that the clients can take to expand their reports.

The study report, which you can download below, explores a basic dilemma in therapeutic interaction: how to respect clients’ right to share what they want to share, while at the same time influencing the ways in which clients share their experiences in group meetings. Using knowledge displays enables Therapeutic Community staff to achieve a balance between these potentially competing tasks.
